About the event

Now in its second year, Silver Pride is a unique online festival designed to connect with and celebrate older LGBT+ people.

Over three days of summer, Silver Pride presents a smorgasbord of guests, sessions and events. There are interviews: Broadway and Hollywood star Alan Cumming is our “opening gala” guest; our Big Saturday Interview is with actress Michelle Hardwick, currently appearing in Emmerdale, and actor and writer Simon Callow will be in conversation with theatre director Robert Hastie.

Running July 30 and 31 & August 1, Silver Pride includes panel discussions, a cookalong and a singalong. Straight Jacket author Matthew Todd and novelist Matt Cain will discuss their work, and there will even be a lock-in as writers Paul Flynn and Jeremy Atherton-Lin discuss the pivotal place of the pub in the gay experience.

The programme also features specially commissioned films: Drag Queen Story Hours and This is Me, a series of first-person testimonies from LGBT+ people.

With this year’s theme ‘everyday heroes’, Silver Pride is a celebration of the heroism that LGBT+ people show in order just to live their authentic lives. It is also a commemoration of those who went before us – those who marched and fought and campaigned and died for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Everyday Heroes - Craig Burton

We want to create conversations about and generate noise around the lives of older LGBT+ folks, as well as promoting intergenerational communication. These ambitions are reflected in our programme: it’s aimed at older people but there really is something for everyone.

Through the range of content we’ll be broadcasting over three days – from celebrity interviews to panel discussions, cookery demonstrations to specially made films – Silver Pride aspires to entertain and inspire,  firing conversations about and generating noise around the lives of older LGBT+ folks. We want to uncover hidden histories and hear stories heretofore hushed. Silver Pride is a celebration of the everyday heroes that most people have to be in order to just to live their lives and a commemoration of those who went before us. Who marched and fought and campaigned and died for the freedoms we enjoy today. Silver Pride is a party and a paean.

Silver Pride is also a network of support groups whose work in creating community is made possible by the money raised by this weekend.

We hope you can join us.

Silver Pride Radio

To celebrate the second annual Silver Pride event, our wonderful sponsor Pride Radio have launched our very own radio station which includes interviews with Lord Michael Cashman, Peter Tatchell and the Rev. Richard Coles; documentaries on Stonewall, Section 28 and the secret language of Polari and of course great music from the 40s up to the present day.

This year, we are creating a Silver Pride Fund. A portal for micro-grants to support and enable the creation of more grassroots groups for older LGBT+ people and groups encouraging inter-generational connectivity and communication. For more info contact helen@consortium.LGBT Or craig.burton@me.com

Lockdown has exacerbated the issues of isolation and loneliness, but we’re determined to make sure the older generations have a reason to celebrate and socialise online.
