About the event

Now in its second year, Silver Pride is a unique online festival designed to connect with and celebrate older LGBTQ+ people.

Over three days of summer, Silver Pride will host a smorgasbord of events. There are interviews – Alan Cumming is our “opening gala” guest – as well as panel discussions, a cookalong, a songwriting masterclass with O’Hooley and Tidow, composers of Gentlemen Jack’s theme song, an in-conversation between Straight Jacket author Matthew Todd and novelist Matt Cain, and even a ‘lock-in’ as writers Paul Flynn and Jeremy Atherton-Lin will be discussing the pivotal place of the pub in the gay experience.

Other guests include Emmerdale’s Michelle Hardwick, actor and writer Simon Callow, musician Beverley Glenn-Copeland, and Britain’s oldest drag queen, 96-year-old Maisie Trollette.

With this year’s theme ‘every day heroes’, Silver Pride is a celebration of the heroism that most people show in order just to live their authentic lives. It is also a commemoration of those who went before us – those who marched and fought and campaigned and died for the freedoms we enjoy today. Silver Pride is a party and a paean.

Everyday Heroes - Craig Burton

We want to create conversations about and generate noise around the lives of older LGBT+ folks, as well as promoting intergenerational communication. These ambitions are reflected in our programme: it’s aimed at older people but there really is something for everyone.

Through the range of content we’ll be broadcasting over three days – from celebrity interviews to panel discussions, cookery demonstrations to specially made films – Silver Pride aspires to entertain and inspire,  firing conversations about and generating noise around the lives of older LGBTQ+ folks. We want to uncover hidden histories and hear stories heretofore hushed. Silver Pride is a celebration of the everyday heroes that most people have to be in order to just to live their lives and a commemoration of those who went before us. Who marched and fought and campaigned and died for the freedoms we enjoy today. Silver Pride is a party and a paean.

Silver Pride is also a network of support groups whose work in creating community is made possible by the money raised by this weekend.

We hope you can join us.

This year we are creating a silver pride grant-making fund. A portal for micro grants to support and enable the creation or more support groups for older LGBTQ+ and the encouragement of inter generational cross generation connectivity and communication. Lockdown has exacerbated the issues of isolation and loneliness, but we’re determined to make sure the older generations have a reason to celebrate and socialise online.
